Mon 30 June: FreeView

Ok so I went ahead and got Freeview, The main reason for this was the up and coming Olympic games, which will have a whole HD channel dedicated to the games. So hopfully we will get some great coverage. After some false starts due to the aerial and the way the house was cabled I did finally get it all up and running. If you have the right aerial its a breeze to setup. I chose the Dick Smith set to box. At $399 including a HDMI cable it worked out reasonable. I wanted to make sure the device could do the full 1080p/i. So that's why the extra cost of the device. Now something that i didnt see well advertised was that very few of the channels are broadcast at the full 1080, only channel 3 was, the others were 720 or less, even the Demo site was only broadcast at 720p. I was disappointed in this. I was expecting at least 1,2,6,7 would be at full HD resolution. I now hope that other channels are added this year at the full 1080.

The operation is very basic and the EPG isn't anything special. Now if I had to do this all again, knowing that only one channel is full 1080 and the other were 720 or less and the limited programs I would have waited, but as stated earlier the main draw card was the Olympics, I only hope that they broadcast that at full 1080 and include more coverage than what will be on the normal channel one.

Firefox 3

Unless you have been living under a rock you will know that FireFox3 final was released yesterday, and they were aiming to get a world record for the most downloads. Will they did. also they now have over 8million downloads in two days. Pretty good going. The regional map is great to see where the downloads are from. Good to see little old NZ downloaded a good amount considering our small population.

Well I dont use the full installed version. I use the portable apps version. And in less than a day they released the final portable version. I run my browser from a truecrypt file. That way if my laptop or USB stick get lost/stolen I know that they cant access my site and browser passwords. Its also easy to jump on to any PC and have my full browser setup with me.

Well after having to rebuild my workstation after the a raid update killed my PC, I now have it back to where it was before it went belly up. Now I have new issues .... surprise surprise.

One is the Sleep option stopped working after the application of SP1, seems to be a common issue, I still have not got a working solution yet for my system.

The other is that PC backup tool built into vista, I just want to back up the system drive. But it wont let me, when i chose whole PC i can disable other drives form the back up. Very frustrating. I may have to look at 3rd party software.

Yip... once again a Vista Nvidia Raid update has killed my system.... To the point where I cannot start Vista, Even after going through the Repair options on the Vista Install CD. So its looking very likely another rebuild, This time I WILL NOT be using the nforce raid feature.

In my searching around for dual boot instructions for Vista and Ubuntu so I can play on a laptop I came across Wubi. I know I can us VMWare, but I really wanted to have the ability to have full graphics card functionality. So wanted Ubuntu to run natively on the laptops hardware. So I know that Wubi has been around for a long while, but this is the first time I have seen it.

On the vista laptop I installed Wubi and then did a Ubuntu hardy heron install. Every looked to be working until I tried to boot into Ubuntu, it locked at "initramfs:" on the console. After doing some googling I found a few references to this. It pointed out that I should have do a check disk first before the Wubi install. Which I hadnt. So a quick uninstall, which worked great, a re-install, everything work perfectly this time round.

So I now have a dual boot lappy, with out having to re-partition or do any re-installs of the base OS. Very cool.
